My Funny Valentine is the story of Zander, an exasperated writer constantly struggling with his relationships and his work. Neither seem to work out for him. He splits his time between sitting in a diner writing and drinking the nights away in the hipster downtown Los Angeles loft scene with his best friends Joel and Johnny. The newly single Zander struggles to find both love and himself. All of this changes when he meets Zoe, the object of his affection and the potential key to his happiness. Upon meeting Zoe and hearing her admission of “steering clear of a new relationship,” Zander embarks upon his master plan. The plan is to have Zoe work with him under the guise of assisting him with his new script. The lead characters just happened to be named “Zoe” and “Zander.” This “meta relationship” works out fine at first until his true feelings are revealed. Caught between the “real” world and “reel” world, Zander learns that there is no substitute for the real thing. My Funny Valentine is a modern day take on love, art, friendship and the blurred lines in between.
